Biography

Born in Loftus, near Redcar, he joined the 106th Light Infantry at Sunderland in 1881as a Regular soldier just before it was renamed as the 2nd Battalion DLI. He fought in Egypt with 2 DLI as a Corporal and later served in India. He was discharged as a Colour Sergeant and moved to Redcar, becoming the borough's Schools' Officer.

In September 1914, he was appointed the Quartermaster of the 13th (Service) Battalion DLI and served with 13 DLI throughout the Great War on the Western Front and in Italy.

In 1918, as Captain and Quartermaster, he was awarded the Military Cross for "long and efficient service".

After the war, he returned to Redcar and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 1936.

Samuel Snow died in 1948.
